Ferry Ride

We rode the Queen of Saanic through the large lily pads of the Canadian Pacific Ocean. "The Queen of Sandwich," my Grandfather mused as we drove onto the large B.C. Ferry. They must have forgotten a few letters...

Naturally, my first stop upon reaching the passenger deak was the restroom. A sign on the door read, "Out of Order -- Use Afts." What the heck is Afts? A quick run around the perimemter and the heckled Afts was found. The stalls were about 2.5 by 5 feet -- no room for dancing. I had to flush the toilet myself and turn on the water, which wouldn't stay on and the hot water was too hot so I had to turn the hot with one hand while washing the other, then turn the cold on to cool the temperature down and wash the other hand. Not only that but the sink dispenser broke into my hands as I attempted to gather the disinfecting suds -- I hadn't put so much effort into washing my hands in years.

Several luxuries I can hardly imagine living without: the Internet, my apple slicer, and motion sensors for public restroom utilities.

I sat in the Queen's room with the Queen of England (not Saanich) herself (in photo form) gracing the head of the boat. Welcome to Assembly Station A. In case the boat sinks we would first like you to all gather in a small confined space so then we can all swim to the life boats together. Oh look! An escape window! 1 foot by 1 foot. I don't think my snoring friend behind me would make it. He, I am sure, is a gentleman and would be the one solemnly crying, "women and children first!"

But I don't plan on sinking today, or having to escape the innards of a mass of floating metal through a one foot squared window.

There is something entirely too romantic about ferries -- even with snoring bald men and young children with ADD losing their minds. I have decided there are four things I will do with my first boyfriend: watch the sunset from the dock and then wait together for the stars to come out, go hiking, wear wool socks under our tevas, and ride the ferry.

Maybe I should work on a ferry -- putting aside my tendencies to get sea sick. The surroundings are beautiful and I bet you get to meet the most enchanting of people. There is a group of 7-8 seniors listening to an old man in a black nike cap and they are all just giggling like school kids. My guess is they were discussing the plausibleness of the ferry sinking because they all erupted in laughter after the captain just announced that we were experiencing "mechnical difficulties." Everyone meet your parties at the designated assembly station!
